DAP has issued a show-cause letter to its Malim Nawar assemblyman Leong Cheok Keng over reports of his alleged plan to defect to rival party MCA, said Chong Chieng Jen.

Chong, who is DAP disciplinary committee chairman, said the party wanted Leong to explain reports of him applying to join MCA.

“Under party constitution, a DAP member ceases to be one if he becomes a member of another political party.

“Any act of applying for another party membership is deemed a treacherous act to the party,” he said.

He added that the disciplinary committee was empowered to act against any member whose conduct was detrimental to the interest of the party.

“The committee awaits the response from Leong and will act accordingly,” said Chong.

Chinese daily China Press had reported yesterday speculations of about 20 DAP elected reps leaving the party.

The report added that Leong would kickstart the defection by joining MCA, to be followed by the rest.

Leong has been vocal in criticising his party leadership, especially the leadership of Perak DAP chief Nga Kor Ming.

Last month he had questioned Nga’s willingness to link up with Umno to form a new state government in Perak.

He had said Nga was no longer qualified to serve as Perak DAP leader because of his “political mistake” over Umno.

Umno however went on to form a new state government with the support of PAS and Bersatu. – January 6, 2021.
