THE prosecution in Najib Razak’s 1Malaysia Development Bhd trial wants the high court to warn the Pekan MP over attacks at its witness, Zeti Akhtar Aziz.

Ad hoc prosecutor Gopal Sri Ram told judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah that the former Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) governor was one of its witnesses.

“We take strong exception to this. And the accused’s statements on Facebook have necessitated her (Zeti) to reply.

“We had served the defence the list of witnesses in August 2019 and the accused knew that she would be called as a witness,” Sri Ram said.

Najib’s lawyer, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, told the court the defence wanted to respond.

“I have only received this notice by the prosecution this morning. I would like to submit to the law regarding this matter,” he said.

The judge then set Thursday to hear submission from both sides on Thursday.

Raja Petra Kamarudin’s blog Malaysia Today said recently Zeti and her family members benefited from the 1MDB funds via bank accounts in Singapore as she helped facilitate the dealings.

Najib, however, posted on Facebook asking for Zeti to explain her role in the 1MDB scandal in which he said she had played a part from the start.

He also said she knew about the money in his personal account from the start and had advised him to open the bank account under his name.

In a statement last week, the former Bank Negara governor denied the allegations that she and her family were involved in the 1MDB scandal.

“I wish to reiterate that my family and I have never received any sums of money from 1MDB.

“The allegations against me and my family are completely false and malicious,” said Zeti in the statement.

Zeti said she has given her fullest cooperation with the 1MDB investigations.

She has also provided the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) with all the necessary information in relation to the investigations on 1MDB and Najib. – January 5, 2021.
