BERSATU is not shaken by the political threats made by Umno during divisional meetings in the past week despite the open threats, said Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal.

The Bersatu youth chief said such threats are normal during assemblies to rile up members.

“It is normal in party-related conferences,” he told The Malaysian Insight.

The deputy youth and sports minister said it is also too early to be hostile towards Umno but it would be detrimental if there are three-cornered fights in the 15th general election

“Too early to say but Bersatu is ready as well but best is to avoid three-cornered fights,” Wan Fahysal said.

Umno delegates at the division meetings over the weekend hammered Bersatu and its president, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, said the party would contest in all seats won previously, including those held by former Umno lawmakers who defected to Bersatu after GE14.

The divisions also passed motions for the party to relook the political alignment it formed with Bersatu in February when Perikatan Nasional took over from Pakatan Harapan after only 22 months in power.

However, Wan Fahysal said it is odd for Umno to train its guns at Bersatu when the latter did not even fire a single shot at the opposition.

The senator also hinted at Umno being in cahoots with opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and DAP, which the party has portrayed as bogeyman for decades.

“Strange they’ve not attacked DAP or Anwar. But we know the realignment towards Anwar and DAP has been ongoing.”

Umno and PN parties, especially Bersatu, have been at loggerheads after both parties formed the government in February.

Tensions in the past few months have increased with Umno leaders claiming the party is sidelined in the government.

Umno refused Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s offer to join the PN coalition and instead asked Bersatu to join Muafakat Nasional (MN).

The MN charter is made up of Umno and PAS and is seeking to be registered as an official entity.

Last weekend, Zahid pledged to uphold MN and will not be a part of PN despite agreeing to form a presidential council with the other parties.

The former ruling party’s MPs have also flirted with pledging their support for Anwar to trigger the collapse the current PN government.

Anwar previously said he had a “strong, formidable and convincing” majority to topple PN. – January 5, 2021.
