Health Ministry denies MySejahtera is spy tool

THE Health Ministry today denied that the MySejahtera app to log movements during Covid-19 pandemic period was a tool to spy on the users.

“A viral video has recently claimed that MySejahtera is not only a contact tracing app but a tool for the government to spy on the public,” it said in a statement.

The app’s only purpose was to contain the epidemic, it said.

It added that although contact tracing could be done manually, the process was faster and more accurate with the app,.

It said the app complied with data privacy as well as medical laws such with the Medical Act 1971, Infectious Disease Act 1988, and Personal Data Protection Act 2010.

The data compiled on the app is managed by the National Cyber Security Agency and National Security Council.

Meanwhile, the app was equipped with functions that informed the user of high-risk locations and connected to the Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre, it said.

Last week director-general of health said Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah the app had aided in the tracing of 9,167 cases of infection.

It has 23.95 million users and 1.05 million premises are registered on the application.

The app has recorded 1.7 billion check-ins, with a daily average of 15 million. – December 1, 2020.
