DR Mahathir Mohamad called out the opposition today for its failure to oppose the budget bill in the Dewan Rakyat today.

He said elections were meaningless if the opposition could support without compunction a government that was established through “corruption and bribery”.

“This is what happened in the Dewan Rakyat today,” he said in a statement today.

Dr Mahathir said Pejuang stood firm against all forms of graft and hoped that the people would also beware and reject corruption.

“As far as the Pejuang MPs are concerned, we firmly stand against the passing of the budget,” he added.

The amended budget bill was passed at the policy stage by voice vote today.

The bill has to pass two more stages and may accommodate further changes.

Only 13 lawmakers from the opposition, including Dr Mahathir, stood up to urge for a division vote – two votes short of the required  15 to carry the motion through.

The other dozen MPs who stood were Mukhriz Mahathir (Pejuang-Jerlun), Amiruddin Hamzah (Pejuang-Kubang Pasu), Shahruddin Md salleh (Pejuang-Sri Gading),  Hassan Karim (PKR-Pasir Gudang),  Khalid Abdul Samad (Amanah-Shah Alam), Mahfuz Omar (Amanah-Pokok Sena),  Dr Hatta Ramli (Amanah-Lumut), Hasanuddin Mohd Yunus (Amanah-Hulu Langat), Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad (Amanah-Kuala Selangor),  Hanipa Maidin (Amanah-Sepang),  Baru Bian (PSB-Selangau) and Mordi Bimol (DAP-Mas Gading)

Dr Mahathir said the opposition’s failure to oppose the bill showed that those who were corrupt, criminals and all sorts of bandits could form the government simply by buying votes and elected representatives.

“When (the country is governed by) those who are unprincipled, who are not of quality and who are willing to pawn the trust of the people to further the interest of the government, the country will be sold to satisfy their greed.” – November 26, 2020.
