BARISAN NASIONAL’S Selangor chief has chided state menteri besar for his silence over alleged insults towards the Selangor sultan by Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Zaid Ibrahim, Malaysiakini reported.
Nor Omar said Azmin Ali should be more sensitive towards the Sultan’s feelings and called for the state government to ban both leaders from speaking in Selangor.
“Mahathir insulted the Bugis and the Sultan was angered.
“Azmin is only acting at the behest of the DAP. Same with Zaid,” he was quoted as saying by Malaysiakini.
Noh was addressing several hundred supporters at a solidarity rally, “Daulat Tuanku” in Shah Alam earlier today.
“By right, we (Selangor BN) should not be the one to organise this rally. The state government should be the one to do it,” he said.
Azmin, however, yesterday asked Zaid to explain his tweet to the rakyat, saying he must be responsible for his statement.
Apart from urging police to investigate the duo under the Sedition Act or other relevant laws, the rally also demanded police stop issuing permits for any talks that involved both leaders.
On October 14, Dr Mahathir, who is also Pakatan Harapan chairman, drew the ire of the Selangor court when he insulted Prime Minister Najib Razak’s ancestors, calling them “Bugis pirates” at the “Love Malaysia, end kleptocracy” rally in Petaling Jaya.
The Selangor royal family are of Bugis descendant. The sultan told English daily The Star he waited nearly three weeks before responding to Dr Mahathir’s remark.
The Selangor Royal Council had urged the police to investigate Dr Mahathir under the Sedition Act for allegedly inciting hatred towards those of Bugis ancestry.
In an interview with The Sunday Star published today, the Selangor sultan once again hit out at Dr Mahathir, accusing the former prime minister of suffering from an inferiority complex and being ungrateful to his former party, Umno.
DAP’s Zaid incurred the sultan’s wrath for telling him to be careful with his words when criticising Dr Mahathir.
Zaid had tweeted “no one is immune when the country burns”, in relation to an interview the sultan gave to The Star, in which he described Dr Mahathir as an angry leader whose “anger would burn the whole country”. – December 10, 2017.
