THERE has been overwhelming support for Lim Guan Eng as thousands of Malaysians donated RM2.9 million to help the DAP secretary-general post bail, said Tony Pua.
The fund-raiser was launched to call upon all Malaysians to unite and fight against the trumped-up charges against Lim, said the DAP national publicity secretary.
“Hundreds of thousands of Malaysians of all races have responded overwhelmingly to join the campaign.
“As at noon today, we are extremely encouraged and moved that Malaysians have donated a total of RM2.9 million,” he said in a statement today.
Earlier, the former finance minister was charged with abusing his power as Penang chief minister and Penang Development Corporation chairman for gratification between August 2013 and March 2016.
Lim was charged along with his wife, Betty Chew, and business executive Phang Li Koon at the Butterworth Sessions Court in Penang earlier today, where all three pleaded not guilty.
Pua said the campaign, launched on Saturday, is to raise funds to bail Lim for the three charges made against him on Friday, yesterday and today.
On Friday, the prosecution had asked for RM2 million bail deposit and the court had granted RM1 million.
Today, the court set the bail at RM100,000 for both Lim and Chew.
Pua reiterated that the funds will be used to post bail and any surplus will go towards the general election.
This, he said, is to fight the backdoor government and return the mandate to Malaysians who voted for change in 2018.
The fund-raiser ends on midnight on Friday. – August 11, 2020.
