DAP has not criticised the judiciary system over the indictment of its secretary-general, Ramkarpal Singh said today.

The Bukit Gelugor MP was responding to statements from Umno leaders accusing the opposition of belittling the judiciary over the prosecution of Lim Guan Eng.

Khairy Jamaluddin wrote on his blog that DAP and Pakatan Harapan were guilty of practising double standards.

“Their action once again demonstrates their double standards concerning the country’s legal process. When it hurts them, the judiciary is condemned. Only last week, they had praised the court when its judgment involving an Umno leader agreed with their wishes,” Khairy said, alluding to the guilty verdict for Umno leader Najib Razak on charges of corruption and money laundering.

Ramkarpal said the science, technology and innovation minister’s statement was “mischievous and misleading”.

Equally misleading, Ramkarpal, said, was the statement from Umno Information chief Shahril Hamdan, who told the opposition to “respect the judicial institution” in a Sinar Harian report.

“The statements above insinuate that the DAP has no respect for the judiciary and has belittled it in the case of Lim Guan Eng who was charged in court today,” said Ramkarpal in a statement.

“It must be stressed that the DAP never criticised the judiciary insofar as Lim’s said case is concerned. In fact, the record will show that Lim had expressed his confidence in the judiciary in clearing his name when he said that he intends to prove his innocence in court and believes that the truth will prevail.

“Khairy and Shahril should refrain from making such statements which can lead people to wrongly  believe that the DAP has levelled unwarranted criticism on the judiciary in respect of Lim’s case which is simply untrue.”

Lim was today charged with corruption in connection with the RM6.3 billion Penang undersea tunnel project. He is accused of soliciting for a bribe in the form of 10% of the profits accrued by the developer. His wife, meanwhile, was arrested and is expected to be charged next week over the purchase of the couple’s bungalow home, allegedly at a price below its market value.

Former PH chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad earlier today said the charges were politically motivated.
