2016 travel ban on Maria within permissible grounds, apex court told

THE travel ban imposed on Maria Chin Abdullah four years ago was within permissible grounds as it involved questions of government policy and national interest, with the potential to affect Malaysia’s ties with South Korea, the Federal Court heard today.

Senior federal counsel Shamsul Bolhassan, appearing for the home minister and director-general of immigration, in his response to submissions by Maria’s lawyer, Gurdial Singh Nijar, in appeal proceedings said: “The immigration D-G deposed the appellant’s ridiculing of the government at a forum and illegal assembly as grounds for the blacklisting.”
