MORE types of travel for Malaysians are now allowed as the country gradually eases restrictions after more than three months of border closures due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Effective June 24, the Immigration Department is allowing Malaysian students to travel out of the country, including those who are taking up offers from universities abroad as well as those who have to sit for exams overseas.

Other types of overseas travel allowed for Malaysians, besides study, are for work and for permanent residence abroad, Immigration director-general Khairul Dzaimee Daud said in a statement today.

“These categories can travel without having to apply for prior permission from the Immigration Department.

“They must show valid permits, such as a student pass, visa, long-term pass, offer letter (from the university), authorisation letter (for overseas exams) and other relevant supporting documents, to the Immigration officer at the country’s entry points,” he said.

Other types of overseas travel, however, such as for business, meetings, conventions or expos, or emergencies, still require permission from the Immigration Department.

Khairul said applications must be submitted to the department with passports and relevant documents.

The department is also allowing certain categories of foreigners to enter Malaysia without requiring prior approval from the department.

These are foreigners who hold Malaysian permanent residency, diplomats, foreign dependents of Malaysian citizens possessing a social visit or long-term pass, as well as foreigners with an employment pass or residence pass and their dependents.

Domestic helpers of these categories of foreigners entering Malaysia are also allowed in. – June 26, 2020.
