THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is now scrutinising the account of Bersatu Youth in its investigations into the RM250,000 allegedly stolen from the home of Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

Sources told The Malaysian Insight the investigation has now expanded after investigators could not find any trace that the money belonged to Syed Saddiq’s parents.

“There is no proof to say that the money belongs to his parents. MACC is now trying to ascertain the source of the funds,” sources said.

“We are looking at Bersatu Youth’s bank account, which has been receiving money from the public since 2018.”

Syed Saddiq, who is Bersatu Youth chief, lodged a police report on March 29 claiming that the money in his safe had gone missing.

He told police that the money belonged to his parents and only a few individuals knew the passcode for the safe that was last opened by him on March 13 or 14.

“If the money came from illegal sources why did we have to lodge a police report. I have cooperated with the MACC,” Syed Saddiq had previously said.

The Malaysian Insight learnt that MACC’s probe involved transactions of a unit trust account belonging to a Bersatu Youth leader, as well as a bank account of a company used as the wing’s account.

The company, however, has been inactive since early January 2018, according to records at the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), sources told The Malaysian Insight.

“But investigations showed the company’s bank account is still being advertised as the account of Bersatu Youth,” the source added.

As the investigations progressed, MACC detained two suspects – a Bersatu Youth treasurer and another member of the youth wing, who is also a treasurer for a youth group.

The second suspect, a 27-year-old man, was arrested on Thursday and has been remanded until June 8.

Last month, MACC ordered Syed Saddiq to declare his assets as part of the investigation.

So far, MACC has recorded the statement from three individuals including Syed Saddiq, who is former youth and sports minister.

On Thursday, MACC lodged a police report against a Facebook account holder going by the name “Ulya Husamudin” for allegedly saying the investigations were politically motivated.

The account belongs to Bersatu Youth information chief, Ulya Aqamah Husamudin, who is known to be a staunch supporter of Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
