THE Bersatu supreme council will meet tonight, a week after “terminating” the membership of founder chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad and four others for supporting the opposition Pakatan Harapan.

Bersatu organising secretary Suhaimi Yahya issued the notice for the meeting, listing Muhyiddin Yassin as the acting chairman.

This is Muhyiddin’s first party meeting after ending his 14-day quarantine after coming in close contact with a Covid-19 patient last month.

The invitation excludes Dr Mahathir and deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir.

“The meeting’s agenda will follow soon,” said Suhaimi in the notice sighted by The Malaysian Insight.

A supreme council member confirmed the meeting at 8.30pm today at the PAUM building in Jalan Susur Damansara, Kuala Lumpur.

Last week, the party issued letters to Dr Mahathir and four others to inform them that they had lost their party membership for supporting PH.

The four were Mukhriz (Jerlun MP), party youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muar), supreme council member Maszlee Malik (Simpang Renggam) and Amiruddin Hamzah (Kubang Pasu).

The “sacked” five dispute their loss of membership, insisting that they remain party members.

The party is divided by infighting involving Muhyiddin and Dr Mahathir over their respective political alignment.

Muhyiddin, who is also the prime minister and party president, prefers to work with Umno and PAS after forming Perikatan Nasional as the federal government. He also has the support of most of the party’s members of parliament.

Dr Mahathir’s group, meanwhile, wants to be aligned with PH.

Earlier today, Bersatu removed two leaders aligned to Dr Mahathir’s faction from their party posts.

In separate letters dated June 2, Marzuki Yahya and Akhramsyah Muamar Ubaidah Sanusi were relieved of their respective duties as Penang state chief and supreme council member.

Tonight’s supreme council meeting is the second without Dr Mahathir and Mukhriz. – June 4, 2020.
