Perak sees massive jump in chikungunya infections

The main reason for the spike in chikungunya infections in Perak is the high Aedes breeding index in the affected localities. – EPA pic, May 30, 2020.

PERAK recorded 454 cases of chikungunya, a mosquito-borne disease, this year up to last Saturday – almost 35 times the 13 infections registered in the same period in 2019, said the state health director.

“Kampar district recorded the highest number this year with 157 cases, followed by Larut Matang and Selama (109), and Kinta (99). In the same period, Kinta showed the highest increase in cases and outbreaks,” said Dr Ding Lay Ming in a statement today.
