AN operation to weed outundocumented immigrants is under way in PJ Old Town, which is under an enhanced movement control order due to a Covid-19 outbreak.

The raid is the latest in a series launched in places that are in lockdown, such as the Masjid India area in downtown Kuala Lumpur and the Selayang wholesale market area.

Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah told The Malaysian Insight immigration and police personnel arrived early this morning in PJ Old Town.

“It is happening now,” she said.

Maria said she did not have any more information about the operation.

Petaling Jaya police chief Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal said the raid commenced at 8am with 200 personnel on site to track down illegal visitors.

A police source said the operation is similar to others carried out in Selangor Mansion and Menara One City Plaza in Jalan Masjid India.

“We are assisting the immigration officers. It is an operation to find illegal migrants,” the source said.

Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has said that such raids are to be expected in a health crisis.

“Even before the pandemic such raids were carried out. There is nothing wrong with the raids as they are held according to the law,” he said in a recent press conference.

PJ Old Town was declared a red zone and locked down for two weeks starting May 10.

The restriction order is expected to end on May 23.
