A TOTAL of 135 reports of domestic violence have been lodged through the government-run Talian Kasih, Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said today, a week after the hotline was set up.
Speaking to reporters, Ismail urged the public to immediately lodge a report if they know of anyone being abused by their spouses during the movement control order period.
“So far, the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry has received 135 reports of domestic violence cases through our Talian Kasih hotline.
“If you know anyone who is being abused, do not hesitate to contact Talian Kasih at 15999 or WhatsApp 019-2615999.
“Neighbours, especially, have to be wary of their surroundings. If you hear something unusual, please contact the numbers,” said Ismail.
It had been reported that the ministry’s hotline had seen a 57%, or 1,893-call, increase from women in distress up to March 26.
The ministry had refuted the figure, saying: “The ministry would like to stress that the increase in the total percentage of the calls covers every category, including calls regarding the Covid-19 virus, Welfare Department referral support cases, counselling cases and others.”
It had urged the public not misinterpret the figures reported.
“Please refer to legitimate sources as well as ministerial explanations before making any statements in any communicative channels.” – April 16, 2020.
