THE Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) and its partner Engage announced they have raised RM363,000 for the #MakanKongsi initiative to help vulnerable communities during the movement control order period.

They want to raise another RM100,000 to provide meals twice a day to low-income earners during the third phase of the movement control order (MCO), slated to end on April 28.

“We are extremely grateful… to the 1,214 donors who have been very generous to help ease the burdens of those who are less fortunate during the MCO period,” said both the groups in a joint statement today.

#MakanKongsi has benefitted almost 6,000 people, they said. Through 26 partners partners and individuals, food vouchers, cash aid, and essential provisions were provided to individuals, families and villages at high risk of starvation.

These partners serve the urban poor, Orang Asli/Asal, migrant workers, refugees, single mothers, OKU and other vulnerable groups.

Bersih 2.0 and Engage expect more people will be affected by a lack of income to support themselves and their families for the remaining two weeks until April 28.

“Many of these same communities would still be at risk as many of them are daily wage earners who depend on small-medium enterprises (SMEs) for work.

“Starvation is a reality for them as they will not have any income until the MCO is lifted.

“We will continue to work with credible groups and people committed to make sure that no one goes hungry during this period.

“Every sen that you donate to us will be utilised to provide meals for these communities and none will be utilised to cover administrative or logistical costs,” they said.
