Many people are using the teller service at banks to withdraw money as they want to avoid the RM1 charge at ATMs, says Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, April 3, 2020.

THE government will suspend the RM1 withdrawal charge at all ATMs to encourage the public to use them and prevent long lines at bank counters.

The move, to take effect on Monday, will last till the movement-control order ends.

Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said many people are using teller service to withdraw cash as they do not want to pay the RM1 ATM charge.

“We were made to understand that many people are still using the cashier service at banks because ATMs are charging RM1 for each withdrawal.

“Therefore, the government, via the Finance Ministry, has decided that all financial institutions and PayNet will exempt the RM1 charge at all ATMs using MEPS,” he told a press conference today.

He advised the public to observe social distancing at all times. – April 3, 2020.
