Penang doctor pleads not guilty to violating MCO


A CARDIOLOGIST has pleaded not guilty to obstructing a public servant from discharging his duties according to the movement control order (MCO), The Star reports.

Dr Ong Hean Teik was charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to two years or a maximum fine of RM10,000 or both, if found guilty.

The 61-year-old is also charged under Rule 3(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2020.

Magistrate Jamaliah Abdul Manap set bail at RM8,000 for the first charge and RM5,000 for the second charge.

Case mention was set for June 9.

She ordered Dr Ong to surrender his passport and report to a police station once a month.

DPP Yazid Mustaqim Roslan prosecuted.

A recording of his argument with the enforcement officers last Thursday went viral, prompting police to investigate the doctor.

The MCO, effective March 18, which was to have ended tomorrow has been extended to April 14.

As of yesterday afternoon, there were 2,470 cases of reported Covid-19 infections, with 35 deaths. – March 30, 2020.
