ONE person was jailed two months while two others were fined RM5,000 each for committing offences related to the movement control order in the first six days.

Statistics supplied by the Federal Court Chief Registrar’s office today also showed that 14 others were remanded nationwide to be investigated for offences related to MCO.

These numbers are all from March 18 to 23.

The Kuala Lumpur magistrates’ court had sentenced an unnamed person for two months after the person pleaded guilty for using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty.

Meanwhile, two others were fined RM5,000 each by magistrates in Johor Bahru and Sg Siput respectively for obstructing a public servant from discharging his public functions, and for criminal intimidation.

No details of the cases was given.

As for the remand cases, the 14 were remanded for investigations for obstructing a public servant from discharging his public functions, for insulting female officers and for breaching the MCO, among others.

Penang, Perak and Kedah all saw three persons each remanded while the Federal Territory had two cases. There was a case each in Negri Sembilan, Johor and Selangor.

The numbers have increased since then.

Yesterday Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said police have arrested 649 individuals as of Saturday for breaching the MCO.

The MCO was enforced on March 18 to curb the spread of Covid-19. It was originally slated to be in place for two weeks, but the government has since extended it until April 14. – March 30, 2020.
