With the MCO in place, volunteer groups should send food to the nearest Welfare Department office at every district for frontline officers to pass the food out to recipients, says Ismail Sabri Yaakob. – The Malaysian Insight pic by Nazir Sufari, March 28, 2020.

CIVIL societies and volunteer groups are not allowed to distribute food directly to the needy or those confined to locked down areas such as in Johor, said Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The defence minister said this was being done to limit human contact during the movement control order, imposed to halt the spread of Covid-19.

He said these groups would be only allowed to send food to the nearest Welfare Department office at every district for frontline officers to pass the food out to recipients.

Ismail said the food will be distributed by Rela officers or Malaysia Civil Defence Force personnel.

“We cannot allow such movements solely to deliver food when the MCO is in place.

“My advice to the groups is that they must deliver the items to the Welfare Department’s office at each district.

“The Rela or the civil defence personnel will take it from there and send them to people in the affected areas,” he said.

Two areas in Simpang Renggam, Johor have been put under enhanced movement control order after 61 residents tested positive for Covid-19.

The number of affected residents increased to 74 yesterday.

The lockdown took place in Kg Dato’ Ibrahim Majid and Bandar Baharu Dato’ Ibrahim Majid near Kluang, affecting 3,570 residents from 650 families.

Under this stricter order, effective from midnight March 26 to April 9, villagers are not allowed to leave their houses. Food will be delivered to them by the Welfare Department. – March 28, 2020.

  • Logistics will be a problem. All cooked food have very limited shelf life and if too late it can cause food poisoning.

  • What do you think? When the government is more concerned about their power and control vs the hungry people it is time to change the government?
