PRIME Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today urged Malaysians to back him and his government in handling the Covid-19 pandemic, despite not being the government they had voted for.

Muhyiddin said he was doing his best for the nation to overcome this crisis.

He added that he was resigned to the fact that he had assumed the prime ministership at a bad time.

“We are a nation at war with invisible forces. The situation we are now facing is unprecedented in history. And, this government may not be the government that you voted for.

“But I want all of you to know that this government cares for you. I am resigned to the fact that I came in as your prime minister, not at the best moment.

“I am facing political, economic and health crises all at the same time. This unprecedented situation, of course, requires unprecedented measures,” he said in his live speech to announce an additional stimulus package today.

He urged all Malaysians to bear with him and his cabinet, admitting that they were not the best, but were doing the best they can to pull through this crisis together, as one nation.

“God willing, we will come out stronger when this crisis ends and the dust settles,” he said.

Muhyiddin took over as prime minister on March 1 with support from Umno, PAS and Sarawak’s GPS.

His earlier move to pull his party, Bersatu, out of Pakatan Harapan saw the fall of the PH government.

PH was overwhelmingly victorious in the last general election, largely on the plank of getting rid of the corrupted Umno and its leaders.

Muhyiddin’s cabinet has a number of Umno leaders in senior positions.

The Covid-19 pandemic has been Muhyiddin’s most pressing challenge since assuming office.

To curb the spread of the virus that has impacted the entire world, Muhyiddan had imposed a movement control order until April 14, which prohibits people from freely moving outside.

Work places and non-essential businesses have been closed during the MCO period, with speculation that the government will impose a stricter movement control in the coming days to break the chain of transmission of the virus.
