77 tabligh participants infected, most of them from Sabah

SABAH has recorded the highest number of positive Covid-19 cases among attendees of a tabligh gathering at Masjid Jamek Sri Petaling in Kuala Lumpur late last month.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 26 attendees of the event from Sabah tested positive for the virus, and the total number of infected tabligh participants now at 77 with 37 new cases.

“As of today, Sabah recorded the highest number of positive cases at 26 and total number of individuals infected stands at 77,” Dr Noor Hisham said.

Dr Noor Hisham said Negeri Sembilan is the second highest with 11.  

Sarawak has six, Penang, Johor, Malacca and Selangor have five cases, Kelantan three, Pahang, Perak, Labuan, Kedah, Kuala Lumpur have two cases each while Perlis has one. 

Earlier, Dr Noor Hisham said 41 new positive Covid-19 cases were reported as of noon today, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 238.

Of the 41 cases, 37 were from patients under investigation while the rest were patients who had close contact.

Dr Noor Hisham said the 41 new cases were all linked to the tabligh gathering at Masjid Jamek Sri Petaling.

The gathering was attended by an estimated 16,000 people.

Singapore has reported new cases involving its citizens who participated in the event, as has Brunei with 38 cases.

Of the 16,000 attendees, 14,500 were Malaysians and the rest were foreigners from around the region. – March 14, 2020.
