Managerial merry-go-round

SO all the managers I mentioned a few months back in this column have been sacked as predicted. The latest being Slaven Bilic at West Ham to be replaced by the great David Moyes.

Now it’s obviously no surprise with Bilic, and the appointment of Moyes was a hardly a surprise, but with it being not even December yet and we have seen so many sackings, they tell a different tale altogether.

Chairmen have little patience and are willing to pull the trigger earlier so as to give the team and new manager some time to steady the ship and get some points on the board. These systematic sackings show that there will be never another Fergie or Wenger type tenure anymore as there is no patience from fans and board.

Results matter and all managers are five games away from the sack if you ask me. Once you are in a slide and players stop playing for you, it’s best to walk. But of course, managers won’t as they will lose on the payout promised. This creates an atmosphere where it becomes toxic for managers and especially the British ones. Now if Barcelona were in the Premiership, do you really think that Pep would have been given the job at 38?

For years, we have asked where the top English coaches with innovative new ideas are coming from and then without looking for the right person, clubs have instead opted for the madness that is the managerial merry-go-round.

Moyes also had success in the early part of his career and when he was a relatively young manager. Marco Silva another one who had success with Hull, and Watford was also a young enough to be given the chance as manager at 34 with Estoril.

Paul Clement will probably be looking over his shoulders right now as he is next in line of sight of the sacking squad. He has come in and done a good job last season but this season, it’s been a different ball game. This is with a team of Renato Sanchez and Wilfred Bony, so patience will be wearing thin in Swansea.

We shall see who is next to go soon. – November 12, 2017.
