NAJIB Razak’s 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) trial dates this week have been deferred to March 2 after lead defence counsel Muhammad Shafee Abdullah obtained permission from the presiding judge to attend his son’s wedding.
Farhan Shafee, who is also on Najib’s defence team, is set to get married in Penang on Thursday.
Presiding judge Collin Sequerah allowed Shafee’s application to postpone the trial, which was originally set to continue tomorrow and Friday, confirmed deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib.
Najib, 66, is on trial on four counts of power abuse to enrich himself with RM2.3 billion from 1MDB and 21 counts of laundering the same amount.
He is represented by a dozen lawyers led by Shafee. Former Federal Court judge Gopal Sri Ram leads the prosecution.
The trial was in the middle of hearing testimony of the ninth prosecution witness, Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi, who was last cross-examined by the defence on November 13, 2019. – February 17, 2020.
