Cops open internal probe into use of police pistol in robbery



POLICE are in the midst of conducting an internal investigation into a robbery allegedly committed by suspects using a police pistol at a hotel in Menglembu here last month.

Perak police chief Razarudin Hussain said an initial investigation found that the pistol was reported missing by a police corporal in Tanjung Rambutan on January 15.

“Investigation is also being done by the police department of integrity and standard compliance on how the missing Walther P99 pistol was found and used by the two suspects in the robbery case,” he told reporters here today.

He said that at 4.10am on January 24, two men aged 20 and 27, armed with a pistol, were reported to have committed a robbery at the hotel’s reception counter and fled with RM509 cash. 

He said no shot was fired and the police managed to arrest and seize the pistol from the two suspects in Sungai Senam less than an hour later.

Both men were charged on February under Sections 392 and 411 of the Penal Code and Section 8 of the Firearms (Heavy Penalties) Act 1971.

Earlier, Razarudin witnessed the handing over of duties from Perak Narcotic Crime Investigation Department (NCID) chief V.R. Ravi Chandran to Lee King Chuan.

Lee, who is formerly Perak NCID deputy chief, takes over from Ravi Chandran who has been transferred to Bukit Aman NCID as the principal assistant director (intelligence/international relations). – Bernama, February 13, 2020.
