Police investigating 22 fake news cases for coronavirus


THE police are investigating 22 incidences of spreading false information about the novel coronavirus.

Two people are already facing trial: the first for three charges at Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court and another person faces a singular charge at Kuala Terengganu Magistrate’s Court.

The charges were filed under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code which makes it a criminal offence for “whoever makes, publishes or circulates any statement, rumour or report with intent to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public, or to any section of the public whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the state or against the public tranquility”.

The offence is punishable by up to two years in prison and a fine.

The public is urged to not speculate on ongoing investigations, said CID (intelligence and operations) deputy director Mohd Roze Shaari in a statement today.

“It is not appropriate to upload or share on social media statements or materials that would jeopardise the peace,” he said.
