TWO people on board the charted flight to evacuate Malaysians from Wuhan, China, which arrived this morning have failed a health screening at KLIA and have been sent to Hospital Kuala Lumpur, said the National Disaster Management Agency.

They were among the 107 passengers, including the Malaysians’ non-citizen spouses and children, 12 crew members, eight humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) officials, and six officers from the Malaysian embassy in Beijing.

The statement did not say if the two had been Wuhan residents or if they were crew members or officials.

The remaining 105 people have been brought to a surveillance centre in Bandar Enstek, Nilai, in Negri Sembilan, where they are to be quarantined for 14 days. The building of a training academy is being used for this purpose.

Family members of the 105 are not allowed at the centre, which is being guarded by the police, and which can only be accessed by authorised healthcare personnel.

“Contact at the centre is limited to health workers only. Other than health workers, there will be no communication with outside parties, including family members.

“Family members are urged to understand the situation and give their full cooperation. For security reasons, the facility will be guarded by the police,” Nadma said.

Screenings will be done twice a day on those under quarantine at the facility, it added.

Nadma is in process of contacting family members to inform them about the evacuees’ arrival and to explain the surveillance and isolation process.

There are still a few Malaysians and their family members in Wuhan who did not make it in time for the evacuation flight because of logistical issues, it said.

There had been 141 people who registered for the evacuation but only 107 turned up to board the flight. – February 4, 2020.
