Upko slams senator's comments on Islamisation of Malaysia

SABAH’S Upko has slammed Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Senator Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki for saying Barisan Nasional has not shirked its responsibility to make Malaysia an Islamic state.

The party’s information chief, Albert Bingkasan, said BN, under Prime Minister Najib Razak, had always upheld a secular Malaysia as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

What utter rubbish was he (Asyraf) talking about? If the report is right and not taken out of context, then Upko has this to say: what he said is wrong. It is not true!

“This beloved Malaysia of ours was founded as a secular state. God willing, Upko is resolved to fight its utmost best to ensure a secular Malaysia,” he said in a statement.

The party’s sentiment echoed those of Sabah leaders who had lambasted Asyraf’s remarks that the development of Islam in the country, which was being strengthened from time to time, was a clear sign of the BN government’s efforts to make Malaysia an Islamic state.

Parti Warisan Sabah’s Penampang MP, Darrel Leiking, said such efforts went against the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

He said the nation was formed on the strict reciprocal promise among its signatories that the federation would remain secular.

Bingkasan said BN had never put forward the stand that Malaysia would be an Islamic state in its election manifesto since it was formed.

“Malaysia is no longer under an autocratic leader, unlike in 1973, when Islam was forced to be made the official religion of Sabah, which was in utter disregard of the spirit of the founding of this country, as stated in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and the Inter-Governmental Committee report.”

Earlier today, Parti Bersatu Sabah acting president Dr Maximus Ongkili told The Malaysian Insight that Asyraf could be ignorant of the BN consensus on the matter, and may have made the remarks in his personal capacity.

“This is not the position of BN.” – October 15, 2017.
