Malaysian skipper, Myanmar crewman missing after boat crash

A MALAYSIAN skipper and Myanmar crew member have been reported missing after their fishing boat was hit by a merchant ship 8.3 nautical miles off Pulau Carey and 11.5 nautical miles west of Tanjung Gabang yesterday.

Selangor maritime director Captain Mohammad Rosli Kassim, in a statement, said the merchant ship hit the Class C fishing vessel about 2am.

“The skipper and three Myanmar crew members set out about 10pm yesterday (Friday).

“Their boat collided with the merchant ship, causing their vessel to leak.

“All four were thrown overboard… two crewmen were rescued by a passing fishing boat,” he said, adding that the damaged vessel has been towed to the Pulau Ketam jetty.

He said a search for the missing duo was launched yesterday morning, after a report was lodged. – Bernama, September 8, 2019.
