DR Mahathir Mohamad has repeated Putrajaya’s stand that controversial Muslim preacher Zakir Naik will not be sent back to India even though there was pressure from several quarters.

“For now, there is no change in our stand,” the prime minister said after attending a gathering with civil servants in Putrajaya today.

However, he wants police to continue investigating the Indian national for his controversial speech in Kota Baru, Kelantan which had spiked racial tension in the country.

“I don’t know who gave him his permanent resident status but he should stay out of politics. He can preach, he can spread Islam and we are not going to stop him.

“But he must not talk about politics. Asking the Chinese and Indians to go back is political. Clearly, he is stirring up racial sentiments… let the police investigate.

“In Malaysia, we have rule of law and we will put that into practice,” Dr Mahathir said last Sunday at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

Several days earlier, Dr Mahathir had said the controversial preacher could remain in Malaysia after his latest remarks questioning the loyalty of Malaysian Hindus to their country.

He had said Zakir could not be repatriated because his life could be at risk in India, where he is wanted on terrorism-related charges.

“He is here because if he is sent back, he might be killed.

“However, we welcome any country that is willing to take him,” he had said in Sepang.

Currently Zakir Naik is at Bukit Aman police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, this time over the reports he filed against four politicians and a former ambassador for allegedly defaming him. – August 22, 2019.

  • If Rule of Law were really in operation, Malaysia would respect the extradition treaties that it signs. Otherwise, it's just empty talk.

  • Send him to Saudi Arabia his original patron and the font of Wahabism. Dr M is misleading us when he says no other country is willing to receive him. He is the scum of the earth.

  • Having pissed off both the Indian and Chinese community, I doubt it's going be safe for Zakir anywhere in Malaysia.. who knows, he might just get runned down by a van or something. The safest option for him in Malaysia is to stay with Mahathir!
