MALAYSIA Airlines Bhd (MAS) made the decision to buy Boeing aircraft in July last year, Prime Minister Najib Razak said today, in response to criticism that MAS was buying American aircraft to curry favour with the United States.
“When an airline wants to buy aircraft, it has only two choices: Airbus or Boeing.
“MAS already decided to buy Boeing 7373 MAX10 in July 2016,” Najib told reporters tonight at the Bunga Raya Complex in Kuala Lumpur International Airport, where he had just landed upon his return from a visit to the US and the UK.
“MAS also bought eight Dreamliners, the most sophisticated aircraft now,” said Najib.
The prime minister said MAS was expanding its fleet of aircraft to improve its services.
“The decision was made by MAS. I merely conveyed the message to US President Donald Trump.
“MAS will benefit from the deal. He got the contract but MAS is getting great planes,” said Najib.
He said the national carrier’s current problems were due to former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s decision to privatised MAS.
“We have to rehabilitate MAS now. Who privatised MAS? The government had to buy it back at three times the market price. Who made those decisions? We have to save MAS now,” said Najib.
Pakatan Harapan had questioned MAS’ purchase of additional Boeing aircraft, which Najib announced during his meeting with Trump.
Najib said MAS would spend US$10 billion (RM42 billion) on new Boeing aircraft.
“We are committed to buy 25 737-MAX 10, eight Dreamliners and perhaps 24 or 25 more 737-MAX 10s,” said Najib. – September 15, 2017.
