IT was the government’s intention all along to suspend Pekan MP Najib Razak, said opposition leader Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

“Yesterday, they gave us the motion proposing to suspend the Pekan MP for three months but this morning they replaced it with another motion to refer him to the Rights and Privileges Committee,” Ismail told reporters in the Parliament lobby today.

Najib was sure to be suspended as Pakatan Harapan has the majority in parliament, he said.

“The motion to refer Najib to a committee is only to make the government appear less cruel.”

Najib has been referred to the Rights and Privileges Committee for disciplinary action over his Tuesday evening Facebook posting of excerpts of the white paper on Felda that was embargoed until Wednesday morning, when it was due to be tabled.

After a two-hour debate, which at times turned comical and strayed into topics ranging from digital forensics to the paper qualifications of certain lawmakers, 86 MPs voted to refer Najib to the committee and 33 voted no.

During the debate, the opposition said the white paper could not have been embargoed as it had been “uploaded” on the parliament website a day earlier.

Pontian MP Ahmad Maslan said the time stamp on a soft copy of the white paper showed that it was uploaded on Tuesday night.

“Furthermore, Bloomberg had also written a story containing details of the white paper,” said Ismail.

The opposition did not, however, explain why Najib’s post on Facebook was a screenshot of the actual report and not a soft copy. – April 11, 2019.

  • Everyone in Parliament must follow the rules. All MPs including those from UMNO including Najib are not exempted. If they don't understand this principle, they should not be in Parliament House.

  • Referring Najib to the Rights and Privileges Committee is the right thing to do. It has nothing to do with making Pakatan look less cruel.
