THE Thailand-Malaysia border wall project will only be finalised after Thailand’s elections, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail told the Dewan Rakyat today.
“We have principally agreed to continue the project at the Thai-Malaysia General Border Committee meeting last July but it can only be finalised after Thailand’s elections,” the deputy prime minister said.
“The wall can be built, subject to technical specifications and financial implications,” she added.
Dr Wan Azizah was responding to Shahidan Kassim (Aran-BN) who asked if Malaysia and Thailand would build a wall along the Perlis-Kelantan border.
The border wall project was confirmed in March 2018 by the Barisan Nasional administration.
The 11km wall is to run along Dan Nok-Dan Sadao in the southern Thai province of Songkla and meant to curb smuggling and trafficking activities.
The Thai-Malaysia border runs the length of 640km.
Dr Wan Azizah said the wall was costly at RM1 million per km and that there were other ways to prevent illegal activities along the border.
“Even the US has not been able to get Congress approval to build its wall,” said Dr Wan Azizah in reply to Nor Azrina Surip (Merbok-PH) asking if the project is feasible. – April 1, 2019.
