Parliament offers condolences, support for mosque shooting victims

PARLIAMENT today recorded its condolences and support for New Zealand in the wake of the mass shootings in Christchurch and Linden.

“We send our condolences to the families of those who have lost their loved ones and those who have been injured, including three Malaysians,” said Dewan Rakyat Speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof.

“The Malaysian Parliament also stands with the New Zealand government and its parliament to reject all forms of violence, terrorism and hatred and we are sure justice will be given to the victims of this crime and bring back peace to the country,” he added.

Dewan Rakyat MPs also honoured victims of the tragedy with a minute’s silence. 

The emergency motion on the New Zealand slaying was brought by Anwar Ibrahim (Port Dickson-PH). Beside Anwar, MPs who supported the motion included Reezal Merican Naina (Kepala Batas-BN), Lim Kit Siang (Iskandar Puteri-PH), Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali (Kuala Nerus-PAS) and Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar (Santubong-GPS).

Others who supported the motion were ministers Gobind Singh Deo (communications and multimedia) and Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman (youth and sports), and deputy ministers Senator Marzuki Yahya (foreign affairs) and Fuziah Salleh (Islamic affairs).

On Friday, Brenton Tarrant allegedly attacked two mosques, killing 50 Muslims and injuring another 50 as they prepared for prayers. 

The 28-year-old Australian, who live-streamed the attack on Facebook, is in police custody. He was charged with murder on Saturday. – March 18, 2019.
