PAS will not back Umno in the Semenyih by-election, said Dr Mahathir Mohamad, adding there was an agreement signed to the effect.
“They said they won’t support Umno,” said the prime minister and Pakatan Harapan chairman in Kuala Lumpur today.
“There was a written agreement that was signed.”
He declined to take further questions or elaborate on the agreement.
Dr Mahathir was responding to a question on his meeting yesterday with PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.
He said politics was the subject of discussion in the 45-minute meeting, which was also attended by PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan and Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Shamsuri.
Hadi, in a video on Facebook, said the meeting – his second with Dr Mahathir after the general election last May – discussed administrative ties between Terengganu and Putrajaya.
“(The discussion was on) petroleum royalty and economic affairs, and also to ensure that there is no conflict in the projects undertaken by the federal and state governments.”
The PAS president also said it is important that the position of Malays and Islam is strengthened in the government, referring to his party being seen as supporting Barisan Nasional in the Semenyih polls.
PAS went all out to help the BN campaign in last month’s Cameron Highlands by-election, which the pact won.
It was reported that the Islamist party also chose to sit out the Semenyih contest under the banner of cooperation with its traditional foe. – February 16, 2019.
