GOVERNMENT figures show a 100% reduction in the crime index for every 100,000 local residents and foreigners, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.

The reduction is based on the National Key Results Areas (NKRA) Key Performance Index (KPI) assessment of the police.

“I am happy to announce a few extraordinary achievements of departments and agencies under the Home Ministry for extraordinary KPIs under the NKRA, NKEA (National Key Economic Area) and MKRA (Ministerial Key Result Area).”

“For the police, there is a reduction in crime index for every 100,000 local residents and foreigners, its community engagement index is also at at 82%,” Zahid said at the ministry’s morning assembly at Putrajaya today.

A month ago, Zahid was reported as saying that the public still viewed the police as ineffective even though the national crime rate had been cut by 47% in the past six years.

Zahid said there would always be “individuals, groups and organisations” that would be “envious” of the Home Ministry’s achievements.

“Other than achieving the highest KPIs in 38 initiatives to show that we are working hard, we have achieved 90% (of our targeted KPI) in the first six months (till June 2017), which is over our actual target which is 69%, ” he said.

Zahid said his ministry had been “victimised” by the online media, and that the media had to report the ministry’s achievements fairly.

“We do not need praise, we only need recognition by the public that we are doing something for the betterment of the nation,” he said.

The other agencies under the Home Ministry that have outstanding KPIs are the Immigration Department for online passport renewals within one hour (143%), Registrar of Society for monitoring religious and welfare societies (102%) and the Film Censorship Board for censoring films within five days (182%).

The NKRA, NKEA and MKRA were introduced under the Malaysian Government Transformation Programme in 2010 with the aim of making Malaysia a developed nation by 2020. – August 28, 2017.
