Pakatan must have consensus on defectors, says Nik Nazmi

Nik Nazmi says Pakatan Harapan is mocking the electoral process and the voters' choice by accepting defectors indiscriminately. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, December 16, 2018.

A CONSENSUS must first be reached between Pakatan Harapan’s leaders before any opposition figures can be accepted into the government, said Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad

The PKR central leadership council member said the federal government should not just be new in name, but must also govern differently.

“I hope no political figure from the opposition will be accepted into any PH component party without the consensus and consent of its leadership, through the presidential council.”

“Any unjust marginalisation of opposition legislators and supporters must cease. Malaysians must be confident that we will not only be a new government, but also govern in a new manner. We need a strong opposition to prevent past tragedies from repeating themselves,” he said in a statement today.

The Setiawangsa MP’s statement comes following the mass exodus of Umno leaders, including veterans, into PH.

More than a dozen Umno members, mostly MPs, have switched allegiance, declaring their support for Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s leadership.

On the other hand, Umno has been calling for its president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to step down, citing his weak leadership as the main reason to relinquish his post.

Nik Nazmi said by accepting defectors indiscriminately, PH was mocking the electoral process.

He added that the choice of voters during the last general election must be respected.

“While their freedom of association must be respected, including for legislators to change their allegiances, it is also important that we respect the voters’ choice during the election.”

“Indiscriminately accepting defectors makes a mockery of the electoral process and will erode the credibility of our democracy.

“Any issue that requires a two-thirds majority only ought to be attempted via bipartisan efforts involving both the government and opposition,” he said. – December 16, 2018.

  • Finally, some common sense from someone in PH. How can any component parties within PH accept Umno defectors so easily? These were the same people swearing allegiance and loyalty to the party and it's president in the run up to GE. Don't insult the public's intelligence.

  • these defactors must relinguish their position as MP/ADUN....stand as independents in the same constituency to see if they still have people support....only if elected should be allowed into any of the PH component parties as ordinary member. Otherwise no. And should not be allowed to hold any positions at state or federal level at least for next 5 yrs....See if he is still interested to switch....all selfish morons

  • It is not democracy at stake, democracy never existed when stupidity in PH reigns like old dark days they once were in. Having seen the light and supported by the people in GE14, the Stupidity of old PH soon reared its ugly head sooner than we could say fook off to them.
