THE squash tournament in the Sea Games is on hold after the bus ferrying the squash athletes collided with another bus on the way to Bukit Jalil National Stadium.
Police said 13 athletes from Thailand, the Philippines (five) and Myanmar (10) were on board. A spare bus took them the rest of the way to the competition venue, said traffic police chief Asst Comm Mohd Nadzri Hussain in a statement.
It is believed that the bus had collided with the bus in front which had braked suddenly.
Several of the athletes are reported to be injured and are being treated at the National Sports Institute.
It is unclear how many were injured and how severe the injuries.
“We are putting the tournament on hold and will resume once we have received a report from the medical authorities,” said Sea Games squash competition manager K. Sivanesan.
“The first round of the mixed doubles which is due to begin at 2pm will be delayed. The players will be able to take part only after receiving medical clearance.”
The squash competition is to start with the first round of the men’s and women’s doubles, with the quarter-finals due to begin at 7pm. – August 21, 2017.
