PAS has some 2,000 members of its volunteer security corps, Jabatan Amal, on duty to maintain order at a mega rally against an anti-racial discrimination treaty in Kuala Lumpur today.

Jabatan Amal director Mohd Nazree Mohd Aris said 400 of them would direct traffic, 190 provide provide free medical assistance, and the rest ensure the safety and security of protestors while curbing provocative actions.

“We are cooperating with police and City Hall to ensure the rally goes smoothly. We started our plans two weeks ago with government agencies,” Mohd Nazree said in PAS mouthpiece HarakahDaily.

While the rally’s organiser is a Malay-Muslim umbrella group called Ummah, PAS and political rival Umno are among the main actors, promising to rally as many as 500,000 protestors today at the event which original purpose was to protest the ratification of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).

But Putrajaya has backed down and called off signing the treaty following pressure from groups that fear ratification would erode the special constitutional position of Malays and Islam in the country.

Despite the government acceding to their demand to not sign the treaty, the rally will continue – to celebrate the protestors’ triumph, the organisers said.

Nazree said Jabatan Amal members will be in uniform for easy identification. They are on duty until 7pm.

Jabatan Amal will lead other volunteer security groups from other parties and NGOs as it has the most members, he added.

The PAS volunteer corps were deployed at anti-Barisan Nasional protests, including Bersih, when the party was allied with DAP and PKR. – December 8, 2018.
