PKR may field new face in Rantau, says Anwar

PKR could field a new candidate in the Rantau by-election, said incoming party president Anwar Ibrahim.

“Yes, nothing is definite for now,” he said at the party’s congress in Shah Alam today.

Anwar was responding to a question on whether Dr S. Steram would be fielded in the Rantau by-election.

The Seremban court yesterday ordered a by-election for Rantau after invalidating Barisan Nasional’s unopposed win of the seat in the May general election.

Justice Azimah Omar held that PKR candidate Dr Streram was unfairly denied the opportunity to file his nomination by returning officer Amino Agos, who had stopped him from entering the nomination centre on April 28.

As a result, the seat was won uncontested by incumbent Mohamad Hasan, who is the Umno deputy president. Mohamad had held the seat since 2004 and was the Negri Sembilan MP for three terms.

Mohamad has been given 14 days to file an appeal, failing which the Election Commission will set a date for the by-election.

Speaking to The Malaysian Insight after court yesterday, Dr Streram said he was confident that PKR would field him again as he was the Rantau assembly coordinator and enjoyed a good relationship with Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun.

Anwar said PKR would select a candidate through due process.

“The decision has to go through a process involving the cabang (division) and state before it’s decided. I haven’t adopted a stance on that,” said Anwar.

He declined to say whether former Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli was a possible candidate.

Yesterday, former PKR Women’s chief Zuraida Kamaruddin had asked the party to field a woman candidate for the seat. – November 17, 2018.

  • This is unbelievable! The poor man wasnt given a chance at GE, he fought like hell and won the case and now when he has his chance to fight for his seat the party wants to discard him like trash. Anwar, you will never get any support from the rakyat if you cannot stand up to your trashy napoleons in the party. We should have just let you stay in prison and rot.

  • This closet homo is screwing around before he is even in power. Stretam fought tooth and nail and deserves to contest, the only one in pkr deserving. How can I cast him aside. I was relieved that Najib was removed now I am very worried that Anwar will become PM. We should all be worried.

  • Dont tell me this is going to be the platform for DSAIs blue-eyed boy, the useless, good-for-nothing, immature and trouble-maker, Rafizi!
People it is time you take a proper look at what PKR actually is and the practices they condone. This is worrying and at the same time shameful. Most frightening is their leader is slated to become the next PM! Please keep eyes peeled on PKR... DSAI may not after all be PM material.. I rather vote for someone who has integrity and not so be chummy with the BN crooks!
They jailed you once or twice before and these ministers did NOTHING to help you and now you go to their corner like a puppy dog with the tongue sticking out and tail wagging!! Shame on you Anwar!!!

  • I have been a member of PKR since 1998, inspired by Anwar Ibrahim's courageous rebellion against Dr M and Umno. Sad to report that after 20 years, barely months after we won a resounding victory over BN's bodohsombong heavyhanded misrule, I am seriously considering withdrawing my moral support for PKR. The only loyalty I still feel at the moment is towards Nurul Izzah and Rafizi Ramli. A lot of people won't like to hear this, but in the last 20 years, the only political parties that have won my admiration are DAP and PSM (both for their perseverance, dedication and determination), Unfortunately, PSM at the moment is lacking in sex appeal, because it behaves more like an NGO than a political party. It is totally unacceptable that Dr Streram has not been offered first go at the seat he has fought so hard to earn.

  • So Anwar, should we apply the same logic to your insistence on being PM? That it is your deemed right? Think about it. Cos if you do this to Streram, no one would sympathize if Mahathir eventually doesn't pick you as PM.

  • Dr Steram is the rightful candidate. No question about it unless Anwar and his party decide not to play by the rules.

  • I support Dr Streram as the candididate. Any other candidate will be a miscarriage of justice and will show PKR to be an Injustice Party. Parti Ketidaladilan. So dont be greedy and allow the poor Dr, who has been to hell and back, to contest. The rakyat will certainly be most disappointed with any other candidate. Even RR has agreed that Dr Streram should be the candidate.
