Lynas' public hearing moved to bigger venue


THE venue for the public hearing on the Lynas advanced materials plant’s operations has been shifted to a bigger location due to an encouraging response from the public.

The hearing on November 11 will now be held at Dewan Cendana in Hotel Sri Manja Boutique, in Bandar Indera Mahkota, Pahang.

The decision to move the venue was due to encouraging public response to the inquiry, said the Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Ministry in a statement today.

The LAMP operations evaluation executive committee was to originally hold its public hearing at Bukit Gambang Resort City, Gambang, Pahang.

The purpose of the public hearing is to hear the clarification of all stakeholders including Lynas Malaysia Sdn Bhd, civil society groups, government agencies, and experts on environmental management, public health, and safety of radioactive radiation.

“The public is invited to attend to hear for themselves the explanations from all quarters involved and need to register in advance for confirmation of attendance,” the ministry said in a statement.

Those intending to attend must also comply with ethics and are not allowed to carry banners, posters, and dangerous items.

The public can also watch the public hearing live via Facebook Live on the MESTECC Facebook page.

The government committee comprises Institute for Environment and Development research fellow Mazlin Mokhtar, United Nations University-International Institute for Global Health visiting professor Jamal Hisham Hashim, and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia occupational safety, health and environment unit director Maketab Mohamed.

Also in the committee are Universiti Putra Malaysia faculty of medicine and health sciences community health department’s Anita Abdul Rahman, Universiti Malaysia Pahang’s Earth Resources and Sustainability Centre director Muzamir Hasan and former director of the of Environment Department’s Air and Hazardous Substances division Che Asmah Ibrahim. – November 8, 2018.
