MACC may call up ex-Felda chairman 'next week'

FORMER Felda chairman Mohd Isa Abdul Samad is expected to be called up by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over Felda Investment Corporation’s (FIC) purchase of hotels in London and Kuching, reported Utusan Online.

It said MACC deputy chief commissioner Mohd Azam Baki had hinted that a key individual might be called up next week.

“We will call up a very important person next week. Who that person is, I can’t say,” he said on the Bernama News Channel last night.

MACC officers raided Menara Felda in Kuala Lumpur last week, seizing documents related to the purchase of the hotels.

FIC is believed to have bought the Kuching hotel at an inflated price, with a source saying the probe into the property’s purchase was launched following the graft-busters’ investigation into the purchase of the London hotel, made between 2013 and 2015.

MACC believes that the London hotel, bought for £60 million (RM334 million), had been overpaid by at least £20 million.

On June 21, Isa and his wife, Bibi Sharliza Mohd Khalid, were called up by the commission to give their statements following Felda’s troubles.

Azam said nine individuals had been arrested in relation to the two hotel buys.

“For the hotel in London, our investigating officers will collect evidence and interview witnesses, such as lawyers and banks.”

He said currently, MACC was investigating only FIC’s London and Kuching hotel acquisitions, and not those in other locations.

“If there are other hotels, we will see whether there are elements of corruption or abuse of power (in their purchase).” – August 10, 2017.
