FORMER prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad should be stripped of his “Tun” title if he continues to criticise the monarchy, Jelutong lawmaker RSN Rayer said.

The DAP member of parliament told the Dewan Rakyat today that Dr Mahathir and Pagoh MP Muhyiddin Yassin want to destroy the country while carrying out a Malay proclamation.

“We see that he has carried out a proclamation and may cooperate with Pagoh (former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin). These two want to destroy our country,” he said when debating the motion on the  2021 Auditor-General’s Report.

“They are also preventing Tambun (Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim) from doing his job and taking care of the welfare of the people.

“If Dr Mahathir continues with his attacks on the royalty, the government should consider revoking his ‘Tun’ title.”

Rayer was referring to a statement by the police that they were investigating Dr Mahathir for allegedly insulting the royalty during the launch of his “Malay Proclamation”.

Rayer called on the police not to compromise if Dr Mahathir continued to “attack” the royal institution.

Last week, police confirmed that they are investigating the former Langkawi MP over his Malay Proclamation movement.

Dr Mahathir is being investigated under section 124B of the penal code for “committing an activity detrimental to parliamentary democracy”.

The Malay Proclamation is the former prime minister’s latest initiative to “unite the Malay community”.

It lists 12 key problems that it asserts are being faced by the Malays and seeks to unite the community across the political divide.

Last month, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and several leaders of the Islamic party signed a document to signify their support for Dr Mahathir’s call for the Malays to unite and save the community.

Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu, information chief Razali Idris and supreme council member Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid have also signed the document in their personal capacities. – June 6, 2023.
