PRIME Minister Anwar Ibrahim told parliament today it is up to the attorney-general to act against Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor over his claim that Penang belonged to Kedah.

“I have received the document from the police regarding the irresponsible statement made by the menteri besar of Kedah who wanted the Federal Constitution to be amended so Penang can be handed over to Kedah. As someone in power, (Sanusi’s) statement is misguided.”

“The police have conducted an investigation under laws under the penal code and the sedition act. The investigation paper has been submitted to the AGC and I have left it fully to the AGC to take appropriate action,” he told the chamber.

Anwar said the Council of Malay Rulers, including the then sultan of Kedah, the British and Siam had prior to the independence of Malaysia agreed that Penang was a state in itself.

Anwar was responding to a question from Lim Guan Eng (Bagan-PH) on Sanusi’s claim that Penang belonged to Kedah, which Lim said had caused anxiety among the residents of the state and threatened the peace and harmony of the country.

On May 29, Sanusi said the two states did not have a border because Penang belonged to Kedah.

Opposition lawmakers earlier attempted to raise a point of order to prevent Lim from asking his question. Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul ordered Lim to proceed. – June 6, 2023.
