BUKIT Aman has said it is also investigating ex-prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad for allegedly insulting the monarchy.

“This case is still being investigated,” Bukit Aman said in a brief statement.

It said Dr Mahathir’s statement was taken by Bukit Aman’s Classified Crime Investigation Unit (D5) at the Albukhary Foundation at 10.30am today.

The police said the investigation was being carried out under Section 124B of the Penal Code for “committing an activity detrimental to parliamentary democracy”.

Earlier today, police had questioned Dr Mahathir over his “Malay Proclamation” movement, his lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali said.

Rafique said Dr Mahathir had had his statement taken by Bukit Aman at Yayasan Albukhary around 12.30pm today.

“Dr Mahathir has informed (the police) that he is ready to be charged in court and that he will answer their questions in court,” he said in a video posted on InspirasiChannel.

Rafique encouraged anyone called in by the police over the Malay Proclamation to declare that they would answer any charges in court.

“Is speaking up for the Malays or talking about the Malay Proclamation a breach of the law?

“Let the people understand what the Malay Proclamation truly is,” he said.

The Malay Proclamation is the former prime minister’s latest initiative to “unite the Malay community”.

It lists 12 key problems that it asserts are being faced by the Malays and seeks to unite the community across the political divide. – June 2, 2023.
