JELUTONG lawmaker RSN Rayer has lodged a police report against Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor for questioning Penang’s sovereignty and right to exist as a state.

This comes after former chief minister Lim Guan Eng yesterday urged the people of Penang to lodge reports against Sanusi for his remark that could create public disaffection.

Rayer said the police should act swiftly against Sanusi for constantly making irresponsible speeches that could harm the nation’s harmony.

“The Kedah MB should have acted responsibly and could have sought advice from legal experts before making such a wild claim on Penang,” he said.

“It has created unease among the public as well as anger. The police report I lodged is not just for the sake of the people of Penang but also to defend the Federal Constitution.

“It is also to uphold the power of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The MB has crossed the line when making the statement and he has to withdraw it.

“This is not the first time. Sanusi has caused a stir many times before and it is time for the police to act sternly.”

Yesterday, Lim said in a statement that by questioning Penang’s sovereignty and right to exist as a state, Sanusi was a public danger to the peace and security of the nation.

“Police reports should be lodged by 1.8 million Penang folk to press for action against Sanusi to protect Penang and prevent ‘political interlopers’ from invading our state to ensure that we can continue our lives peacefully and enjoy prosperity,” said the DAP chairman.

He said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Ramkarpal Singh had both refuted Sanusi’s remarks that Penang belonged to Kedah.

Sanusi had said he doubted the sovereignty of Penang and the right to exist, as the state should be under Kedah.

Following his provocative comments, the Penang state assembly passed a unanimous motion, supported by a lone Penang PAS assemblyman, condemning Sanusi for doubting Penang’s sovereignty.

Anwar also hit out at Sanusi, saying that he should understand the Federal Constitution.

Lim, who was also present at the press conference, questioned Sanusi’s intention.

He said after three years of becoming the menteri besar, there was no reason for Sanusi bring up such a sensitive issue.

“Before this, he had said nothing. As we are going to state elections, why must he use this matter now. To create issues and to create trouble among us,” he said.

“This is not the first time. In February, he did say something similar and the Penang state assembly unanimously condemned his statement.

“He cannot be left off the hook. When Perikatan Nasional was the government, why didn’t he say this? Why now?”

Lim urged Sanusi to respect the Council of Rulers as the matter had been agreed upon by the rulers. – June 1, 2023.
