Anwar, Amirudin likely to win, study shows

SEVERAL big names are set to lose in tomorrow’s general election, a democracy outreach organisation said.

Kuasa executive director Praba Ganesan said top Perikatan Nasional leaders such as Mohamed Azmin Ali and Ahmad Faizal Azumu are among those who will fall at the ballot.

Azmin is defending his Gombak seat against Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari while Faizal, who is Bersatu deputy president, is going up against opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim in Tambun, Perak.

“Other candidates (with the potential to lose) tomorrow are Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz (Kuala Selangor), Nur Jazlan Mohamed (Pulai), Khalid Samad (Titiwangsa), Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (Setiawangsa), Mohd Radzi Jidin (Putrajaya) and Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (Masjid Tanah),” the think tank said in its findings.

Praba said the research was conducted through a qualitative finding based on primary data collection onsite and with voters.

“The study was done together with historical data and candidates’ appeal to particular constituency voters,” he said.

Meanwhile, Praba said former PKR member Zuraida Kamaruddin, is also going to lose her seat in Ampang to new PKR women’s chief Rodziah Ismail.

Wee Ka Siong (Ayer Hitam), P. Prabakaran (Batu), Muhyiddin Yassin (Pagoh), Saifuddin Abdullah (Indera Mahkota), Fahmi Fadzil (Lembah Pantai), Nurul Izzah Anwar (Permatang Pauh) and Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor (Putrajaya) are expected to retain their respective seats.

“We will see a close fight tomorrow among the candidates. Aforementioned candidates may not be able to win with a huge majority,” he added.

This election has seen 945 candidates from various parties standing for parliament, the highest number in the country’s history.

The 14-day campaign period – for 222 parliamentary seats, 59 state seats in Perak, 42 seats in Pahang and 15 in Perlis, as well as Bugaya in Sabah – will end at 11.59pm tonight.

Some 21.1 million eligible voters will go to the polls tomorrow. – November 18, 2022.
