AFTER receiving treatment last week jailed former prime minister Najib Razak is back at the Kuala Lumpur High Court for the 1Malaysia Development Bhd trial after a week’s break.

Dressed in a suit, Najib looked calm as he arrived at the court complex at 8.45am escorted by security from Kajang Prison, where he is serving his 12-year jail sentence.

Last week, judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah had adjourned Najib’s hearing because the accused was admitted at Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL).

On Friday, Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital (CRH) gave Najib the green light to return to jail after undergoing treatment.

He was sent back to Kajang Prison to continue serving his sentence.

CRH had said Najib’s family members have been briefed on his current condition, adding that medical experts from HKL have also agreed he can return to prison.

“Najib had undergone treatment and rehabilitation during his time at CRH and recent checks on his condition found that he is recovering well.

“He was taught certain exercise techniques by physiotherapists. Our consultants also met with his family members where they were informed of his condition.

“Following the advice from experts in HKL and CRH, Najib will be sent back to Kajang Prison,” CRH said.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said Najib was transferred to CRH because he required physiotherapy.

Social media was abuzz last week with allegations that Najib had been given preferential treatment after he was sent to CRH.

The Prison Department released a statement confirming Najib was sent to CRH.

The statement came three days after allegations were spread on social media that a person codenamed Merpati was receiving special treatment in jail.

The Prison Department’s statement however did not address several other allegations on social media, including the proposed modification of prison conditions for Najib.

The department said Najib is receiving treatment in line with Section 37 of the Prison Act 1995 as well as the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for Treatment of Prisoners, adding that it is responsible for ensuring the health of an inmate at all times and is obliged to provide the necessary treatment, facilities and medicine towards this end. – September 26, 2022.
