WILL the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)  investigate Bachok MP Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz for alleged abuse of power over his daughter’s wedding, Lim Guan Eng asked.

His comment came after the MACC had raided the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) on September 19, believed to be in connection with a flood barrier project.

“Will the Kota Baru Municipal Council be raided just as MACC has done with MBSA,” the DAP chairman said.

Social media was abuzz recently after it was reported that Nik Abduh, a PAS lawmaker, had sent a letter to Kota Baru authorities requesting for manpower to help out at his daughter’s wedding.

In the letter, which was widely shared, the Bachok MP also asked the municipal council for tables and chairs, among others, for use at the function.

The items requested were sent to the wedding venue after instructions were issued by the council’s top management. Other requested services were waste management and traffic control.

Lim said Nik Abduh’s request for cooperation from the Kota Baru Municipal Council (KBMC) gives rise to disturbing questions about abuse of power as Nik Abduh had used his Bachok MP official letterhead.

“Nik Abduh should explain what he meant by requesting cooperation from KBMC for his daughter’s wedding,” he said.

According to Lim, KBMC president Rosnazli Amin confirmed receiving a request for cooperation from Nik Abduh but refused to divulge if the PAS lawmaker’s request had been approved.

“Normally these services from local councils can be provided for a fee or at specified rental rates that are offered to all.”

“Nik Abduh did not offer to pay any fees or rental rates in his official letter. There is no need for Nik Abduh to use his official letterhead and Bachok MP status to seek KBMC’s cooperation for a private family event not related to his public duty to his voters.”

“That is why MACC should investigate Nik Abduh and possibly raid KBMC to see whether there is any abuse of power by Nik Abduh or whether KBMC is trying to cover up the matter.

MACC must show that it does not practise double standards between KBMC and MBSA,” the Bagan MP said. – September 25, 2022.
