THE Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme will be reviewed and realigned to be industry-driven, so as to produce graduates in focus areas identified in the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is also acting education minister, said in line with the government’s 10-year economic plan, TVET will be made an “enabler” in efforts to develop the country.

For this year, he said, the Education Ministry and other ministries providing TVET will focus on the TVET Empowerment Strategies Map developed by the TVET empowerment cabinet committee.

“All the relevant parties need to ensure the success of the industry-led implementation of TVET to overcome skills-mismatch issues and the dependence on foreign workers, and eventually, produce TVET graduates who meet industry needs,” he told Education Ministry staff in Putrajaya today.

Dr Mahathir said to prepare students to face the 4th Industrial Revolution, the ministry will ensure science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education is enhanced.

“To attract more students to STEM fields, the ministry is providing more options for them to choose elective subjects in the STEM package, besides literature and the humanities.”

He said the ministry’s digital learning platform, which was developed last year, will be strengthened.

“The curriculum content… includes elements like the internet of things, coding, robotics and big data in primary and secondary school subjects.” – Bernama, February 6, 2020.
